Learn to configure a subdomain to a separate IP address. Very useful for sites with shopping carts who want store.theirsite.com to look like it's on the same server.

Learn to configure a subdomain to a separate IP address. Very useful for sites with shopping carts who want store.theirsite.com to look like it's on the same server. Requirements: Cpanel Control Panel and WHM access.

Example: domainame.com is hosted on server A but the shopping cart store is on server B. You need to make it look like domainname.com is also on server B. Setup a subdomain to point to a differernt ip address and voila!

1. Edit the Domains DNS Zone
Login to your WHM control panel or manually through SSH and edit a DNS zone, select the domain you wish to modify.

2. Adding the A Record
Create a new record for the subdomain Eg: Type in store for the name, select A record type and then type in the IP address you need it to mask to.

A Entry

3. Ensure it Works
Make sure there isn't an actual subdomain created in the users account that you're trying to point to a different IP address or the pointer/mask will not work!

I used to have alertra, but it proved to be only useful to give you a false sense of actual uptime. A good friend of mine had a server that was down for half a day and it never logged a thing. I had a downtime of about 10 minutes, but alertra recorded it as 2 hours. Not sure about everyone else, but I didn't like them and soon dropped them after a month.

I don't find this review very useful, it doesn't say much that I didn't already know. A review that focuses more on the technical side of things would be much more useful to hosts. I.E. Performing tests of the service to determine accuracy, etc. I have used Alertra before, from what I could tell it seemed reliable, however, I didn't use it in the kind of production environment where you'd know if it was working or not.

Alertra is a good service, but I personally have found uptimewarden.com to be more affordable and provides some stronger features for web hosting resellers and web designers like client reports, text matching etc.
